In a brilliant display of talent and confidence in himself and his equipment, Titleist Brand Ambassador Rory Mcllroy trusted the Pro V1x golf ball and a complete bag of Titleist clubs to win the Quail Hollow Championship for his first career PGA Tour victory. Just days shy of his 21st birthday, McIlroy went 5-under over the final five holes to close with a course record 10-under 62, topping the nearest competitor and Masters champion by four shots. He capped the magical round by converting a 40-foot putt on the final hole to finish at 15-under 273 to mark the second consecutive week a Titleist Brand Ambassador has joined the winner’s circle on the PGA Tour after Jason Bohn’s wire-to-wire victory at the Zurich Classic.
McIlroy becomes the first player since 2006 to make the cut on the number and win a PGA Tour event. McIlroy was two over the cut line on Friday with three holes to play, before making an eagle on his 16th hole. His 10-under par 62 is the lowest final round for a winner on Tour this year, a mark previously set by fellow full line Titleist player Bill Haas, who shot 64 en-route to his victory at the Bob Hope Classic.
McIlroy trusted the feel and playability of Titleist from tee-to-green for his victory including the Pro V1x ball, 909D2 driver, 906F2 fairway metals, new AP2 irons (3-4), new MB irons (5-9), Vokey Design Spin Milled C-C pitching, sand and lob wedges and Scotty Cameron Studio Select Fastback 1 prototype putter.
McIlroy topped a leaderboard littered with Pro V1 loyalists and full line Titleist players. Fellow Pro V1x player Angel Cabrera shot a 4-under 68 to finish 3rd while Titleist Brand Ambassadors Brendon de Jonge (Pro V1x), Bo Van Pelt (Pro V1) and McIlroy’s fellow young gun Rickie Fowler (Pro V1x) finished 4th, 5th and 6th, respectively.
The Titleist Pro V1 was also the overwhelming golf ball of choice at the Quail Hollow Championship with 100 players putting their trust in Titleist golf balls, more than five times the nearest competitor with 19. Titleist also topped the counts for iron sets, sand, lob and approach wedges and putters
Elsewhere, on the Champions Tour, David Eger (Pro V1) relied on a Titleist golf ball and 14 Titleist clubs to capture the inaugural Mississippi Golf Resort Classic and Martin Piller (Pro V1x) won a final round duel with fellow Titleist golf ball loyalist Daniel Summerhays (Pro V1x) to capture the Stadion Athens Classic for his first career Nationwide Tour title. These victories take Titleist’s 2010 worldwide golf ball win count to 39, compared to just 9 for the nearest competitor.
A magnificent maiden PGA Tour victory for Titleist Ambassador Rory McIlroy, and further victories on worldwide professional tours for Pro V1 loyalists, continues to prove that the world’s best players opt for the matchless performance of Titleist for their success.
