RECORD-BREAKING RORY STORMS TO U.S. OPEN VICTORY WITH TITLEIST
Titleist Brand Ambassador Rory McIlroy re-wrote the record books this weekend as he stormed to an emphatic 8-shot victory in the U.S. Open Championship at Congressional Country Club. The 22-year old from Holywood, Northern Ireland went wire-to-wire after opening with a stunning 6-under par 65. His unprecedented winning score of 16-under par, 268, was testament to his devastating ball-striking and effortless control throughout the week, which powered him to an 8-shot lead entering Sunday’s final round. A birdie at the 1st hole on Sunday led to a bogey-free front-nine of 34, two-under par, and signalled his major intentions to the rest of the field, as he becomes the youngest U.S Open Champion since the legendary Bobby Jones in 1923.
On his way to victory, McIlroy broke a total of 12 records including the 36, 54 and 72-hole scoring records. He also became the first player in tournament history to go lower than 12-under par, reaching an extraordinary 17-under par during Sunday’s final round after almost making a hole-in-one on the par-3 10th. The win moves McIlroy to 4th in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Rory trusted Titleist equipment throughout his bag at Congressional as he left his rivals in his wake, including the Pro V1x golf ball, 910 D2 driver, 906 F2 fairway woods, MB irons, Vokey Design Wedges and Scotty Cameron prototype Newport putter. The victory saw McIlroy top a leaderboard littered with Titleist golf ball loyalists, including 3rd place finishes for World #2 Lee Westwood (Pro V1x) and Robert Garrigus (Pro V1). Titleist was the overwhelming golf ball of choice at the U.S Open for the 63rd year in a row with 96 players opting for the #1 Ball in Golf, more than 5 times that of its nearest competitor with 19. Titleist also topped the counts for iron sets, sand, lob and approach wedges, and putters.
Elsewhere, on the European Tour, Australia’s Matthew Zions (Pro V1) closed with a 2-under 69 to win his first European Tour title at the Saint-Omer Open. The overnight leader, Zions won in convincing fashion as he shot an 8-under 276 total, seven strokes ahead of three players, including Titleist Pro V1x loyalists Peter Gustafsson and Craig Lee. Titleist was the overwhelming golf ball of choice at the event with 117 players, more than six times the nearest competitor with 18. Titleist also was first in iron sets; and sand, lob and approach wedges.
Further wins for Mathew Goggin (Pro V1x) on the Nationwide Tour and Chawalit Plaphol (Pro V1x) on the Asian Tour boosted Titleist worldwide win count this season to 77, seven times more than the nearest competitor with just 11.
